political science; international relations; human rights; political communication | My mentorship philosophy is grounded in transparency, honesty, and communication, and fostering a truly collaborative experience. I believe in setting out clear expectations on how tasks should be accomplished and the anticipated timeline for completion. At the same time, I want mentees to communicate their personal goals of what they want to get out of working on a project. I start out the beginning of a work relationship with a new mentee by meeting with them and discussing their short- and long-term professional goals and asking them to write down a list of things they want to get out of working with me on a project. I also believe in providing timely, regular feedback on metees' performance, with a goal of providing verbal and written feedback. At the same time, I encourage mentees to provide me with feedback. A two-way street of open and honest communication is crucial to productive research and accomplishing our respective goals. I also believe in opportunities for hands-on demonstration of tasks when mentees are embarking on a new research task or express that they find a certain task to be overly challenging. I believe that demonstration is crucial for effective mentorship so that mentees have an opportunity to truly learn how to do a particular skill before they need to implement it independently. Furthermore, I never want a mentee to perform a task that I would not do myself. Finally, I want all mentees to feel comfortable making suggestions on how to improve research. | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes

La entonación del español hablado en Colombia. | Yes | 2 | Open to all majors | Spanish, phonetics, acoustic analysis, computer skills, linguistics | Being an honest communicator and an exceptional organizer are the essential qualities of a mentor. Honesty, eagerness to learn, and time management are the key values that will guide my interactions with the mentees. My main motivation as a mentor is to serve others in their personal growth and professional goals. I believe that success is possible by self-assessment through time. This assessment needs to be constructive, specific, and aimed at improvement. This will drive growth. My job is to provide a safe and trusting space where mentees can demonstrate their personal and professional value. I am confident that in such a place, mentees can freely, and sincerely, share their thoughts, concerns, and goals. To start growing, it is fundamental to acknowledge our strengths, shortcomings, background, perspectives, and identity to build from our unique traits and skills. My hope is that by working together, I also enrich my experience as a mentor and together we support our own journey of continuous learning and growth. I plan to demonstrate the values and principles of my mentoring philosophy by performing self assesment of this project as well. The biweekly tasks may be adjusted depending on how we work during the previous weeks, and these adjustments must reflect my commitment to self-improvement. It is expected by the end of our reflections to be able to look back and appreciate our learning process. Doing research is challenging, but I am certain that the outcome is going to positively enrich our personal and professional experiences. |

physics astronomy supernova particle neutrino | Like any other interaction, mentoring is only worthwhile when both sides feel the experience is positive and rewarding. Both the student and mentor need to be treated as humans deserving respect and be able to communicate expectations and boundaries freely before starting a project. When beginning a new project with a student, I cover expectations on technical aspects, communication, and workload which I adapt to each student. These are not static, but adaptable throughout the duration of the project. Additionally, making a student research project that is thematically connected and introduces the student to new skills plays a vital role. I design projects that both develop skills required across many careers and invoke a curiosity and desire to ask compelling questions about how the natural world works. When charting out a research project, I maintain significant flexibility to make the work adaptable so a student has freedom to reach a specific goal or to pursue a particular aspects of the science they may find intriguing. Each interaction with the student is an opportunity to course-correct in a direction that student would find more fulfilling. |

Dr. or Prof. | Andrew Ballard | he/him | aob23b@fsu.edu | Faculty | Social Sciences and Public Policy | Political Science | Partisan Negotiation in Congress | No | 2 | Political Science | Congress; Negotiation; Policymaking; Political Parties | Each relationship between a mentor and mentee is different. As a mentor, I first identify mentees' goals for working together and evaluate their existing knowledge. These steps allow me to design tasks that build on existing strengths and develop weaknesses, so that mentees can get as much out of the process as possible. As research projects are often large and multifaceted, knowing more about mentees' goals and skills helps me more easily find tasks that will be interesting and meaningful for mentees, which in turn helps mentees feel more ownership of the project. Whenever possible, I provide mentees with hands-on experience in doing research, because the best way to learn is by doing. This is modeled after my own experiences as a student being brought onto research projects with faculty, being given the chance to learn and grow by learning and carrying out the process of a research project. Failure is inherent in this process. In learning, we will fail from time to time. The important part is to work through failure and learn from mistakes. My mentees are encouraged to try and fail, and I provide compassionate and constructive feedback to help them learn. |

Climate Change, Gentrification, Climate Adaptation, Housing, Resiliency | My mentoring philosophy is based on understanding individuals and supporting their strengths, while providing honest feedback, and an open collaborative environment. I believe creating a safe environment to ask questions and foster honest communication is extremely valuable to the research process and to the success of a mentorship program. I believe it is important for mentees to be able feel comfortable asking questions about research goals, actions, and process. I also believe it is important to set clear goals and objectives with step-by-step processes to complete those goals. A good mentor takes interest in their mentees’ experiences, perspectives, and interests to foster a relationship that is both educational and productive. By sharing experiences and providing real world examples a mentor can provide valuable insight into both failures and successes to help mentees in their decision-making process. | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes

Graduate Student | Social Sciences and Public Policy | Askew School | Understanding what keeps NGOs in Haiti | No | 1 | Social Sciences, Social Work, Business, Other | Haiti, NGO, system-building, nonprofit, grassroots | My mentoring philosophy is that everyone learns at different paces and that learning happens when people feel safe and can collaborate with others in a non-judgmental environment. A mentor-mentee relationship is an exchange of knowledge that works better where the mentee feels safe to make mistakes, can learn from those mistakes, and can move forward without fear. I have had mentors from different walks of life in my career. I have found that those who get the most out of me spent the time getting to know me as an individual. Since I have been at FSU, I have had limited opportunities to mentor students in my faculty post and as a graduate student. Our weekly meetings are an essential cornerstone of our interaction, offering a dedicated time for us to connect. In case of emergencies, I encourage my mentees to reach out to me promptly, allowing us to collaboratively address any challenges that may arise. My profound gratitude goes out to the mentors who supported me on my academic journey. As I continue to grow and evolve, I am motivated to extend that same generosity and assistance to as many young students as possible. It's my belief that, with my increasing strength, I can pay forward the kindness and guidance I once received. At the heart of my mentoring philosophy is the core duty of guiding mentees in exploring their full potential. I hold the conviction that every individual possesses a unique and exceptional essence. Recognizing that mentees might initially find certain aspects of their projects unfamiliar, I approach this phase with patience, providing unwavering support throughout. By fostering a nurturing environment and offering guidance, I am confident that mentees will progressively refine their skills and capabilities. Ms. | Eleonora Falini | She/her/hers | ef22m@fsu.edu | Graduate Student | Arts and Sciences | Classics | Apology and Apologies: a Matter of Literary Genre | Yes | 1 | Classics | apology; Greek Literature; Rhetoric; Plato; Gorgias; Lysias; Attic Tragedy; Greek Poetry; Literary Genre | Doing research means, in primis, asking ourselves questions to which there does not seem to be a single answer. For this reason, I believe that the two fundamental and complementary elements to conduct a research project are: curiosity and humility. You have to ask yourself the right questions, to try to offer potentially right answers; but at the same time, you have to accept the risk of making mistakes many times. Indeed, the researcher must know from the beginning that he will make countless mistakes, and he will get one right answer, maybe. Failure does not exist, because the final positive result comes from many small errors, corrections, intuitions and adjustments. A research mentor is a fellow explorer: in front of crossroads and doubts, you have to choose in which direction to proceed, and experience can often indicate the right path. But other times, you’re in the dark, and teamwork is everything. From the beginning, it is important to identify mentees’ goals, evaluate their understanding and talents, and build on them, in an interactive environment of mutual understanding and sharing. The mentees will develop their own method of working under the mentor's suggestion and gradually acquire confidence and research autonomy. The meetings with the mentor must become more and more a place of equal exchange and free communication, where no one feels judged or at fault. Freedom of thought, there are no wrong questions to ask. Concentration, perseverance and curiosity: research will give great satisfaction. | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes

brand activism, advertising, marketing, consumer perceptions, communication | Mentoring is a two-way relationship between mentor and mentee. I aim for mentees' to share and establish their interest to guide their part in the project as much as possible. My mentor philosophy includes: (1) Establishing mentees' baseline understanding before identifying their goals (2) Developing a relationship founded on mutual respect (3) Creating a safe environment in which mentees feel that is acceptable to fail and learn from their mistakes and feel comfortable to be themselves (4) Creating an interactive environment for learning (4) Balancing accountability with empathy and understanding that life happens (5) Promoting learning through inquiry and encouraging growth through challenges |

At this meeting, they will be exposed to other students' research, and they will be able to share their work with the group. | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes

Eco-Anxiety, Sustainability, Nonprofit Organizations, Employees, Mental Health, Organizational Culture, Public Service Motivation | My mentoring philosophy is based on the following principles: 1. I believe that each mentee is unique, possessing their own strengths and weaknesses, much like myself. I am dedicated to collaborating with each mentee to identify their goals and formulate a plan for their accomplishment. While project advancement is crucial, I equally prioritize the professional development of the mentees. 2. I firmly believe in establishing a secure and nurturing environment where mentees feel at ease sharing their ideas and posing questions. 3. I hold the belief that offering mentees feedback and guidance is crucial, while also granting them the space to make their own mistakes and learn valuable lessons from them. 4. I firmly believe in recognizing the achievements of mentees and inspiring them to persist in their journey of learning and personal and professional growth. |

My goal is to give mentees ownership of their work so that the end result feels like their own developed product. I believe that promoting accountability enables the mentee to put their best efforts into the project. I see mentees as a valuable asset to research projects because I will count on you to bring a unique perspective to the table that will help me envision multiple possible research outcomes. I rely on your criticism of my work to develop a creative solution. | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
