Post Doc Arts and Sciences Coastal & Marine Lab A Review of Oyster Reef Restoration Goals and Success Metrics in Florida No 1 Biology/Biological Sciences, Oceanography, Geography, Environmental Science, Natural resources/conservation Oysters, Data Analysis, Literature Review, Restoration, Marine Biology My goal as a UROP mentor is to foster a welcoming and encouraging learning environment, to allow students to explore their interests and grow in their scientific skills. Experience wise, I will provide training and support in industry and research relevant skills. Training will allow the student to gain experience in literature review, exposure to fishery species that is economically and ecologically important throughout the United States and the world, and training in critical thinking and data extraction and analysis that is applicable to many research fields. The student will be provided with background and foundational knowledge on the project and the importance of interdisciplinary work and social considerations in fisheries management and decision-making. The development of this project will be integrated into a broader review, yet the student will also have opportunities to adapt parts to their relative interests and future aspirations, as independence and problem-solving skills are critical components of a successful researcher. We will work collaboratively to develop the project, communicate frequently, and expectations and goals will be outlined early on to allow the student to prepare to fit work in with their busy schedule. Open and honest communication is key to a successful respect-based mentor-mentee relationship, and I will work to provide regular feedback and support throughout the project and am available for additional support as needed. I ask that the student likewise be open and honest with regular communication on their needs, progress or concerns. This will help ensure work-life balance and project success. Yes Yes Yes Yes

Faculty Arts and Sciences Biological Science Distinguishing friend from foe: identifying novel genetic pathways for innate immune recognition of beneficial and pathogenic bacteria. Yes 4 Open to all majors microbiome, microbiology, immunity, immunology, plant Our purpose: To do “good” science with integrity. Experiments that are not honest and trustworthy are experiments not worth doing. This includes accurate enough documentation to facilitate repeatability.

Our vision: To pioneer understanding of how Nature balances symbiotic relations between multicellular hosts and their microbial communities to improve host health and productivity.

Mentorship meetings are crucial for ensuring trainee learning and practice of effective experimentation. Mentorship meetings should be used to ask questions about the literature and to discuss hypotheses, experimental design, data analysis, and conclusions. I practice an open door policy, and meetings can be held at the bench, in my office, or even in the hallway. Meetings over text or video are discouraged. Trainees are expected to meet with me a minimum of once per week. Mentorship meetings may be scheduled ahead of time with me to ensure sufficient access. However, spontaneous or unscheduled meetings are also encouraged, so long as time is available. These meetings are key to your professional development as a scientist and lab member.

The lab also maintains its own Slack channel (or similar app) for communication. Slack should be used to discuss lab business, schedule celebrations, share papers and protocols, and for peer-to-peer communication concerning the lab. Slack can also be a more effective way than email to contact me.

Overall, I want you to feel comfortable talking with me and other lab members and to provide easy access to mentorship and communication.

Faculty Education Educational Psychology & Learning Systems SNA/DNA: Social Network Analysis and Digital Network Analysis for Rural Communities Yes 1 Communications, Education, Open to All digital skills, social networks, needs analysis UROP offers a great opportunity for students to have early research experiences. I apply the cognitive apprenticeship model in my research teams, in which my UROP mentees are full members of the research team. As cognitive apprentices, you get to see all parts of the research process, contribute your own insights along the way, and gradually gain responsibilities as you learn how to perform different research tasks. I have high expectations for our research outcomes, and will train and support you to meet them. I will also seek ways to help you work toward your long-term educational and professional goals.
Above all else, I believe in kindness, respect, and lifelong learning, and aim to foster a research environment that supports these ideals.
I have worked with many UROP students over the years. Many have become collaborators on presentations at national conferences and some have published with me. The opportunity is there for you if you seek it. :)

Faculty Fine Arts Theater with a Mission Idy Codington *** Diversifying Tallahassee’s Bicentennial Yes 6 open to all majors theater, reenactment, Florida history, Tallahassee We find that research (like rehearsing a play) achieves breakthroughs when people work together to examine turning points from lots of different viewpoints. History comes to life when you learn to read between the lines, tapping into subtext. That’s why our approach to mentoring is collaborative, guided, and flexible.

We believe in giving you lots of team support as you put into practice a research process that we have repeatedly proven effective.

And we believe in giving you all the freedom you need to blaze a highly individual research trail, across barriers of time and space into face-to-face encounters with Florida’s polycultural past.

Digital Sociology, Financial Literacy, Influencer Economy, Digital ethnography, Financial behavior In my journey as a mentor, I view myself as a collaborative guide more than a directive leader. My philosophy is anchored in the belief that each mentee possesses unique strengths, aspirations, and experiences. Recognizing and celebrating these differences is my first step. I prioritize understanding their individual goals and dreams, ensuring that our collaboration is tailored to their personal and professional trajectory.
A cornerstone of my mentoring approach is the cultivation of a relationship grounded in mutual respect. This provides a safe space where mentees feel comfortable to voice their doubts, share their mistakes, and seek guidance without fear of judgment. Mistakes, in my perspective, are invaluable learning opportunities. Thus, I encourage mentees to embrace them as stepping stones, not stumbling blocks.
Equally crucial is empowering mentees to take ownership of their work, fostering a sense of responsibility and promoting accountability. Creating an interactive environment, where learning is driven by inquiry, ensures that mentees remain curious and engaged. I invest time in discerning what motivates each individual, using it as fuel to propel them forward. By challenging them, I aim to stretch their boundaries, ensuring they grow beyond their comfort zones.

My course assignments include a proposal, a first draft, and a final draft, and I provide comments and suggestions at each step assist in developing the work. We also include reports on work in progress in classes, as well as peer reviews of each others papers. Working on your own, but also as part of a reference group that reports to each other on a regular basis, provides a useful way for students to check in on their work and ask if your ideas make sense, and also to further develop research, analysis, and presentation skills. No 1 Students majoring in Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Science, Scientific Computing, and related STEM disciplines may have the easiest time spinning up on this project, but I am open to taking on students from any major. Climate change, global warming, radiation, atmospheric science, meteorology My general inclination as a mentor is to allow students space for creativity and exploring ideas on their own; however, I recognize the importance of being flexible and planning to have different levels of hands-on engagement and direction depending on student needs and their progress in the project. The beginning stages of a project will naturally have more “hands-on” involvement. I will meet with students individually at least every other week and hold regular group meetings that will include research updates as well as professional development and discussions of topics like research ethics. I also believe in the importance of having multiple mentors, as no one individual can provide everything a student may need in terms of research and career guidance and general life advice and will thus assist my students with networking opportunities. Each student in my group will complete an Individual Development Plan to help identify personal and career goals and evaluate progress toward meeting those goals. My group will be a safe environment in which “failing forward” is encouraged, challenges are viewed as opportunities for growth, and all perspectives are valued. Yes Yes Yes Yes

Further, I accept that experience is one of the best and most lasting conduits for learning. In the mentor/mentee exchange, I commit to providing clear and straightforward expectations, to being available for any and all questions or concerns, and to creating work and environment productive to learning. Graduate Student Education Educational Policy and Leadership Studies, Higher Education Caring More for Our First-Year, First-Generation and Low-Income Students: Perceptions of Barriers and Transitional Success No 1 Education, sociology, psychology, interdisciplinary social sciences but open to all majors and those that are interested. Education; College Students; First-Generation; Social Barriers A mentoring relationship is a reciprocal connection of learning and growth amongst both parties. From my previous experiences of being both a mentor and mentee, this connection can be a transformative and down-the-line lead to more opportunities. To have this occur, I believe the most important foundation that needs to be set is an inclusive environment to where students feel seen and heard. With this, mentors should listen to their ideas, questions, and concerns. Yes Yes Yes Yes
