Last year, although it was my first time being a mentor, I was honored to be nominated for the best mentor award in UROP. Here are three things I kept to maintain both good relationship and productivity. 1. Open communication: We establish 30-minute-long weekly meeting to update the progress and discuss next steps. I check whether the tasks sound reasonable, if there is any foreseeable obstacle, and encourage the team members. We also keep a meeting note, where the tasks, progresses, and deadlines are recorded. 2. Open opportunity: We encourage UROP students to explore more opportunities through our project and milestones. GDC, AECT, and NCA are all great venues to showcase your work and network with your future employers. 3. Open possibility: As graduate students, we are willing to learn with you. It is okay to make mistakes, learn from trials and errors, and get unexpected results. That's what being a student means. |

ICLS and AECT are great conferences where we can present our work in the context of learning designs and network with your future employers. Our end goal for 2024-2025 is a journal publication, which will look great on your CV if you're considering graduate schools for your next step. 3. Open possibility: There will be so much to explore with the data we will collect- the types of debrief, the emotional states of students in the escape room, the tweaks in the designs of escape rooms, etc. If you have an idea on analyzing the data, we will happily develop it together and you will lead a paper, which, again, will look great on your CV if you're considering graduate schools for your next step. |

Mr. | Zida Wang | he/him | zwang17@fsu.edu | Graduate Student | Fine Arts | Art Education | Creating Virtual Museum Exhibitions: A Practical Guide Book Project | Yes | 2 | Open to all majors. | Virtual Exhibition, Museum Studies, Museum technology, Inclusive design | As a museum educator at FSU MoFA, my mentoring philosophy is deeply rooted in constructivism, which emphasizes active engagement, critical reflection, and collaborative inquiry. I believe in co-constructing knowledge with my mentees and encouraging them to actively participate in their learning journey by engaging in hands-on exploration, dialogue, and reflection. Through collaborative inquiry, mentees are empowered to ask questions, explore ideas, and challenge assumptions, fostering a deeper understanding of themselves and their work. In my mentoring approach, I aim to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment where mentees feel comfortable expressing their thoughts, sharing their experiences, and asking questions. By providing scaffolding support and encouraging active participation, I guide mentees in constructing their understanding, developing critical thinking skills, and fostering a growth mindset. Together, we embark on a journey of discovery, exploration, and self-discovery, where mentees are empowered to take ownership of their learning and grow into confident, capable professionals in their chosen field. |

I aim to take a hands-on approach early on as students are developing the foundational skills needed to conduct research. My approach will become more hands-off as students progress in their learning to foster independence and critical thinking. Ultimately, my goal is for students to learn how to become curious, how to ask questions, and how to think for themselves. Knowing “how to think” rather than “what to think” is an important skill for academic and research success. | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes

Bryce Morsky | bmorsky@fsu.edu | Faculty | Arts and Sciences | Mathematics | Social ecology and evolution | Yes | 2 | Open to all majors with skills in mathematics | disease, ecology, evolution, game theory, mathematical biology, social norms | Learning biological and social theory is an exciting endeavour, and mathematics plays an integral role, which many students are unaware of. I am excited to introduce this fact to my students. For students coming from other fields, it provides motivation for learning the mathematics. And, for students more knowledgeable about mathematics, it provides an exciting arena for applications of mathematical theory. Working at the crossroads of biology, social science, and mathematics, I strive to make theory engaging and accessible to students coming from different backgrounds. I think that the intrinsic multidisciplinarity of the field is a strength in captivating students. I am enthusiastic about sharing the relevance and scope of theory: how it has and can address our questions, and its applications to and impacts on society. Though most students will not likely take a scientific career, the tools of scientific inquiry, mathematical problem solving, and modelling will be useful throughout their lives. It is important to find a topic that interests both the mentee and mentor. Since my interests are varied, I work with my mentees to find a topic that they are passionate about and capable completing. The projects can vary a great deal in the amount of mathematics and coding required. Students likely will not have all the required skills. However, if they are willing, I can teach them anything they may be missing. Interest and work ethic are key to success. |

Faculty | N/A | National High Magnetic Field Laboratory | Solid-state NMR characterization of materials and pharmaceuticals | No | 2 | Chemistry, materials chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science and engineering, physics, biomedical engineering | chemistry, materials science, spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, instrumentation | True teachers and mentors are those who enable us to think for ourselves. Undergraduate research provides ample opportunities outside the classroom to apply textbook concepts and to develop creative solutions to real-world problems. We will work practicing the inquiry-based learning approach, asking unexplored questions and designing strategies to answer them. I believe that a firm understanding of the basic concepts is necessary to appreciate advanced applications of the subject. To this end, students in our team will learn to balance carrying out practical experiments along with studying basic chemistry and NMR spectroscopy. Weekly meetings will be scheduled during which time we will review new concepts learnt, evaluate progress made, and make plans. Projects will involve collaborating with research groups across the world, which will the expose the student to new areas of research and work culture. I believe in a transparent and open work culture where students make sustainable progress while feeling comfortable to discuss challenges and prioritize self-care. | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes

My philosophy is that research is a collaborative effort. Mentors and researchers work together, sharing what they learn with each other because that's how knowledge should work. Any successful academic project requires cooperation, transparency, and mutual respect. my hope is that researchers helping with this project will join me in learning about how to use federal law enforcement records to tell a story about marginalized religious practices in the United States, as well as how to organize and distill decades-old information to make telling that story easier. | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
