We will work together not only on preparing studio production but also on dealing with logistics, communication, organizing inventories, packaging, archiving, and social media promotion for exhibitions and events. Many students are often focused on these in their senior year of undergraduate study as professional development. It will be great to expose them early on so they can start thinking about how to find their skill set and interest in the art field to get a job. Besides their research, they can learn to do some administrative aspects of work and they can apply this to their own. I also look forward to building up friendship and mentorship. This will be a great opportunity for me to learn about their work and help them build their studio practice as well. I have been a student in higher education for nine years now, and have had wonderful mentorship experiences, and some not-so-wonderful experiences! I use these experiences and my desire for an equitable and asset-based research lab to build my mentoring philosophy. My top priority for your mentorship experience is to impact your learning- whether that is learning of content or learning about your academic interests and disinterests. I do this through an approach in which I delegate tasks that interest you and speak to your existing talents and skills. I encourage input and communication from all in the team, regardless of your "expertise" in the subject area, as I believe that everyone has unique contributions to make to the project. As a university professor, I strive to provide mentees with an environment conducive to learning, knowledge that will improve their ability to articulate their individual standpoints, and constructive feedback that will help them instead of discouraging them.

Students learn skills best through an interactive teaching style that demands their participation and challenges them to think. As such, when mentoring an undergraduate student, my style or approach is interactive and respectful. Towards this end, my approach to training the next generation of scholars and advocates involves a great deal of appreciation of their time and efforts. Students are provided clear aims and project tasks. I make every effort to make my assignments are concise and that people don’t feel lost in the assignment. I also provide examples of responses to the assignment, if necessary. Before starting work as a research mentee, I meet with students to learn about their interests as well as their current strengths and challenges. To discover what motivates mentees, I ask them to talk about their goals for the experience and how much time they intend to devote to the collaboration. I also ask mentees about their work and class schedule because I wouldn't want our work to interfere with other responsibilities. Finally, to encourage a free exchange of feedback, I ask my mentees to reach out via phone, email, or remote interface to discuss any concerns or questions that emerge.

Ultimately, the mentee and I should see our working relationship as part of the project, one that evolves over time and adapts to new developments, and is something we can eventually be as proud of as the project itself. Our integrative approach provides diverse training in these areas for undergraduate students in order to better prepare them for an academic career. After teaching music for thirteen years, I decided it was time to pursue a career in academia. While supervising a music education intern, I discovered my true passion: teaching teachers.
I am excited to work with students who can embrace the three C's of mentorship: Clarity, Communication, and Commitment.
Clarity- I strive to be as clear in my own expectations while working with students on a project and therefore welcome questions, wonderings, and even constructive criticism after building a healthy rapport. Clear expectations leave little room for "guesswork" in something as complex as research.
Communication- I will actively listen to student questions to best provide the support necessary for completion of research tasks and assignments. I will challenge students to express their thoughts clearly and thoroughly both in-person and in academic writing.
Commitment- I will promise to make myself available to student-researchers and encourage them to do the same throughout this experience.
Most importantly, I would like to grow as a mentor and supervisor as much as I would like to see my students learn. The values of clarity, communication, and commitment are reflected in my approach to research. Teaching and learning have and will always be my greatest passions.		 Yes Yes Yes Yes

I believe a mentor is a temporary role that supports a mentee in their growth and development. It is important for mentees to know where they want to go in order to get the best support from a mentor. Most of my time towards building a mentorship relationship occurs within our weekly check-in time. It is important that you can articulate your needs as a mentee within that time and are able to be at those meetings.
