Graduate Student Arts and Sciences Biological Sciences Assessing coral cover and mortality in relation to farming damselfish No 1 Biology, Environmental Science Coral reef, marine biology, CoralNet, photo annotation, farming damselfish I plan to work closely with the student at the beginning to teach methods and to answer any questions. As the student’s confidence increases, I can slowly become more hands-off if the student desires. In order to mentor the student as a scientist, and not just a photo annotator in CoralNet, we will also practice finding and discussing scientific papers, generating research questions, analyzing data in R, and scientific writing. Our lab is committed to creating a supportive and inclusive environment and we encourage students typically underrepresented in STEM to apply. Students that are eligible for federal work-study should note that they can earn their work-study funds through UROP. Our lab is very collaborative in nature, and the student will be able to learn from and work alongside other undergraduates in the lab that are also working with CoralNet for other projects. My goal for the end of the school year is for the student to feel like they are a part of our research team and to be prepared to further pursue their interests in biology and research. morphology, vocabulary, language, education, teachers I am a second-year Master's student in the FSU School of Communication Science and Disorders. While pursuing my bachelor's at FSU, I benefitted from working as a research assistant and Honors-in-the-Major student, an experience that allowed me to supervise over ten research assistants, recruit over 170 participants, write a thesis, and help collect data that has been published in top-tier journals. I am continuing to research in multiple areas at the graduate level to prepare for pursuing a PhD, but my primary interest is literacy which led me to work towards a Master's thesis under Dr. Tibi.
I strongly believe that the best lessons are learned from opportunities to attempt new tasks coupled with the guidance necessary for success. I am committed to giving my mentees opportunities to learn research skills and identify their research strengths and weaknesses. With these opportunities, I will provide resources and guidance to help my mentees learn from their experiences and become confident researchers. My desire is that my mentees would be able to walk away from their UROP experience able to identify their research interests and confidently pursue opportunities to explore these interests further. I would like to help my mentees gain the experience and skills necessary to succeed in any research environment. As someone who owes my current success to the opportunities and guidance I was given in earlier years, I am very excited for the opportunity to help undergraduate students succeed in their research endeavors.

My responsibilities as a mentor to provide guidance and resources are important, and I place the same emphasis on mentees' proactive engagement in learning and interests in the research procedures that would lead to positive experiences. To make that happen, I meet my mentees at where they are in terms of their experiences, goals and enthusiasm, and learning styles. Besides, I value mentor-mentee alliance and conscientious efforts of both. Thus, I make my expectations and tentative plans for the research project clear in advance so that mentees can be informed about their goals and workload. Lastly, I would love a sense of compassion for any of us, as we sometimes struggle. Social media, College choice, First-generation students Through my teaching experience in an undergraduate-level course, I have developed my mentoring philosophy. I believe successful mentoring should include three main components: (1) student engagement, (2) interaction with students, and (3) respect for students.

First, learning can occur through students' engagement. In my class, I integrated diverse learning activities to have learners cognitively engage in class rather than receive a one-sided lecture. Along with that, I checked their progress and provided feedback to ensure that they did not develop any misconceptions. In research mentoring, I will provide students with specific research tasks to which they can apply their knowledge and skills and provide clear feedback.

Second, I strongly believe that interaction with students is the best way to enhance teaching and mentoring. I learned from my own teaching experience that to identify students' needs and optimize my teaching, I should directly interact with the students rather than make assumptions. Since mentoring is an interactive practice, I should be open to students’ feedback and ready to adapt my teaching methods to their needs.

Last but not least, I believe that students can learn best when they feel valued as individuals. As a graduate student myself, I am aware that students have their own lives outside of the classroom, and their personal lives and well-being significantly influence their learning. When I showed my care for them, students appreciated it and were more actively involved in the class. Healthy and productive mentorship is built on mutual respect.

foreign aid, international relations, United Nations My mentoring philosophy is rooted in the idea that I should be helping my mentee’s further their own academic and future careers just as much as they help me with my research project. Therefore, I prioritize helping my mentees develop skills and experiences that will help students stand out on their graduate school and job applications. This means I am always open to helping students develop new skills, even if those skills don’t directly relate to my research project. Moreover, I think it is important to encourage my mentees to try new things and allow them the freedom to go about tasks in their own way. Faculty Fine Arts Art Education Artistic expressions of family resilience before and since COVID-19 No 2 Open to all majors; however preference will be given to psychology, arts, and humanities majors. international; family; stress; resilience I enjoy the process of learning new ways to impart knowledge and see students grow in their knowledge about themselves and about the world. Therefore, I prefer a developmental approach in my mentorship. Mentees learn through having a variety of experiences. I believe that there are phases that mentees work in reaching their professional goals. Each phase is built upon previous knowledge, skills, and experiences. Through disclosing my research and professional experiences that are applicable to mentees’ tasks, I hope that mentees can process how they are gaining new insights and skills to increase openness to talk about successes, challenges, and mistakes in their work. I prefer open communication about mentees’ needs and goals to support accomplishment of research projects.
Ultimately, my mentorship model is experiential. Hands-on learning is beneficial to mentees’ development. I do not believe in talking at mentees; talking with mentees creates stronger relationships and teams. Change occurs in teams through mutual encouragement of growth and being flexible. When one team member changes through authentic communication, the entire team shifts and benefits. My collaborative way of processing options in research helps mentees develop skills that are applicable yet unique to their professional goals and personality. By mentees willing to integrate their personality in our collaborative work, their confidence and skills in research blossoms.

Graduate Student Communication and Information FSU College of Communication and Information Richard Waters Content Creation over Degree Completion No 1 "Open to all majors." social, media, influencers, theories, communication I grew up with the motto, "each one, teach one," ringing in the background, as I would encounter others on my academic journey. I have a pay it forward concept and also an open mind to all those I come in contact with when it's time to learn or share knowledge. With that being said, the type of relationship I look for with a Mentee, is an honest and very understanding relationship, with mutual respect. When we respect other individuals, we see them and their actions through a lens of understanding. My greatest goal is for my Mentee to feel like they can interact comfortably around me and ask as many questions as need be, and also answer as much questions as they can to make sure we are always on the same page. There is a saying, that you won't know until you ask, and I think that is so true in all aspects. We will not always get it right, or know the answer to everything, even after researching, this is something I want my Mentee to remember at all times. Promptness, manners, accountability, and professionalism makes one stand out, and I believe are very good qualities a Mentee can have, as well as a Mentor. A Mentee that is not afraid to share an idea or concept when they feel as though it may work more than what is in place, takes courage and that promotes excellent results. Lastly, laugh as laughter is good for the soul. Yes Yes Yes Yes

At the same time, I want mentees to communicate their personal goals of what they want to get out of working on a project. I start out the beginning of a work relationship with a new mentee by meeting with them and discussing their short- and long-term professional goals and asking them to write down a list of things they want to get out of working with me on a project. I also believe in providing timely, regular feedback on mentees’ performance, with a goal of providing verbal and written feedback. At the same time, I encourage mentees to provide me with feedback. A two-way street of open and honest communication is crucial to productive research and accomplishing our respective goals. I also believe in opportunities for hands-on demonstration of tasks when mentees are embarking on a new research task or express that they find a certain task to be overly challenging. I believe that demonstration is crucial for effective mentorship so that mentees have an opportunity to truly learn how to do a particular skill before they need to implement it independently. Furthermore, I never want a mentee to perform a task that I would not do myself. Finally, I want all mentees to feel comfortable making suggestions on how to improve research. Yes Yes Yes Yes

By having open and honest communication between all parties allows for work to be done efficiently and also allows the mentee to feel as if their voice is being heard. I also strive to ensure that my mentees can go about their time in UROP and conduct research with clear and obtainable goals in mind-whether that be research or mentee goal specific. Thus, it is important to me to foster a safe and inclusive environment that allows the mentee to build upon their skills and become better versions of themselves as humans and as researchers.
