Faculty | Arts and Sciences | Biological Sciences | Bioinformatics & Genomics | No | 2 | primarily computational biology, but also genetics, biology, life sciences | bioinformatics, computer programming, maize or human genomics, genetics | As a Professor of Biological Science, my focus is on studying plant genetics, maize epigenomics, and genome architecture, utilizing 3D imaging, molecular genetics, and genomics. My students are engaged, therefore, in our shared research goals. My mentoring philosophy involves treating students as though they are already in the next stage of their professional development. While the expectations are high, I make sure to acknowledge and support their efforts, training, and growth, irrespective of the outcome of their projects. By doing so, they experience the ups and downs of being a real scientist and receive meaningful guidance and skills to enhance and apply their education. To bring this philosophy to life, I help my students produce lasting contributions from their work in the form of presentations or peer-reviewed publications. This enables them to make a tangible impact and gain recognition for their work. After working with student scholars at FSU for over 20 years, I created the E3 principle of student mentoring - Empowerment, Excellence, and Elevation. EMPOWERMENT: Creating opportunities for additional career growth and putting students in charge of their projects in order for them to learn to own and enjoy their achievements. EXCELLENCE: Hands-on training teaches excellence in scholarship, and how adhering to high standards in data quality and management can lead to success. ELEVATION: Profvding opportunities to excel beyond the traditional student experience, embedding them in conferences, scientific discussions, and collaborations. These activities elevate their performance, confidence, and compatitiveness for their future careers. |

Graduate Student | Social Sciences and Public Policy | Sociology | What Are They Up To? A Content Anaysis of Twitter Accounts Reinstated by Musk | No | 2 | Open to all majors | content analysis, sociology, media, deplatforming, twitter | My mentoring philosophy is centered around tailored guidance, mentee autonomy, constructive feedback, and celebrating diverse persepectives. Effective mentoring is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Each mentee is distinct, with their own aspirations, strengths, and challenges. My philosophy emphasizes the importance of customized guidance, where I collaborate with the mentee to co-create a tailored roadmap that aligns with their goals and aspirations. I also try to harness mentees' sense of responsibility and individuality to collaborate with them; it's about empowering mentees to discover their own insights and solutions. I strive to create an environment that encourages critical thinking, self-discovery, and autonomy. I approach feedback as a constructive and developmental process, fostering a growth mindset that sees challenges as opportunities and failures as stepping stones to success. I aim to create an environment where feedback is welcomed, celebrated, and integrated into the journey of improvement. Finally, I am dedicated to creating a mentoring space that respects and celebrates individual differences, while also addressing systemic barriers. By embracing diverse perspectives and experiences, we can create the strongest arguments for our research. |

Graduate Student | Arts and Sciences | English | I’m 100% That Bitch with a Blank Space: The Feminism(s) and Feminist Rhetorical Strategies of Taylor Swift and Lizzo | No | 1 | English Editing, Writing, and Media Women's Studies Communication |
feminist theory, feminist rhetoric, popular culture, Taylor Swift, Lizzo | An ethic of care guides my mentoring philosophy. I want to get to know my mentee as a human, not just as a mentee: What are my mentee’s current goals? What are my mentee’s goals for the future? What’s their favorite Taylor Swift song? (I’m a huge Swiftie.) Furthermore, I create non-hierarchical power dynamics by supporting my mentee’s agency throughout the time that we work together. I want my mentee to meet their individual goals while also reaching the broader goals of the project. Throughout the project, my mentee and I will check in regularly to address any challenges we’re facing, make sure that we’re on the same page about the progress of our goals, and decide if we need to revisit and revise our goals for any reason. When I give feedback to my mentee, I will balance constructive criticism with praise, letting my mentee know their areas for improvement and their strengths. I likewise will seek feedback from my mentee: what do they want to stay the same? What would they like me to do differently? In the process, we will learn from each other. Ultimately, I hope that this experience fosters growth in a wide range of skill sets—such as research, communication, and self-discipline—which can be used in my mentee’s future career. |

Community/Industry Research Mentor | N/A | Association of Recovery in Higher Education and the Collegiate Recovery Research Lab | Descriptive database for Research on Collegiate Recovery Programs | Yes | 6 | All majors welcome to apply with interest in recovery populations, especially Higher Ed, Med students, Sociology, Interdisiplinary studies, Social Work, Public Health, and Psychology | collegiate recovery programs, literature review, college student health | I learned how to build and develop research projects-and how to fund and disseminate that work-in collaborative research teams of undergraduate, masters, doctoral, and postdoctoral students. My mentoring philosophy promotes transactional mentorship where I view myself as a life-long mentee seeking to learn from everyone I interact with, including my students. Too often I find students are oppressed when their imagination and creativity can breathe life into old projects. As a mentor, I seek to empower students in pushing their intellectual limits to manifest even their most complex projects. This work is difficult, time consuming, and can drain the excitement out of "producing knowledge." I believe participating in professional working groups provides valuable insight and experience to the rewarding process of being a researcher. | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | ||

In this context, there are certain points of emphasis for every student that I mentor, including the development of basic research skills, critical thinking, the ability to acknowledge limitations, and the ability to ask for help when necessary. Beyond that, however, my mentoring approach is centered around a philosophy of individualization. Health Informatics, Data Science, Machine Learning, AI | As a faculty member at FSU, I strive to be an effective instructor and an influential mentor. I believe as a mentor, student success is my success. I have been advising students at all levels in School of Information and other departments. I am the chair of the supervisory committee of 4 doctoral students and a committee member of 21 doctoral students. I am also a member of two Master thesis committees. I have supervised 14 undergraduate students at FSU through the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP). All my mentees will be invited to attend the weekly lab meeting either in person or via Zoom. During these meetings, I will share research updates, upcoming events, and discuss current projects. Many of my students are minorities. Since 2016, my students have published 21 journal papers and 27 conference papers under my supervision. Notably, my UROP student Akhil Shiju (a sophomore at FSU) published a paper with me in the 10th IEEE International Conference on Health Informatics (ICHI 2022). Another student-led collaborative paper won the 2nd place of the Student Paper Competition in AMIA 2019 Annual Symposium. Importantly, with the skills and training experiences, my student mentees have landed promising careers in both academia and industry. In addition, I have been a mentor for junior faculty members at FSU. I will be the primary mentor for one of the six junior tenure-track assistant professors to be hired under the U54 FLORIDA-FIRST Health-Science Brigade program funded by the National Cancer Institute of NIH. | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
