As a Global Scholar and Sustainability Fellow currently engaged in related projects, I am actively laying the groundwork for what I hope will become the focus of my Honors in the Major thesis. In the spring of my freshman year, my UROP group was awarded an IDEA Grant to advance our research project under the continued mentorship of Dr. Irene Zanini-Cordi. We've also co-authored a pedagogical article outlining how our approach could be replicated in curriculums covering similar content. The piece is scheduled for publication in a special issue of Eighteenth-Century Studies, one of the leading journals in the field. I am currently a part of the Research Intensive Bachelor's Certificate (RIBC) Program in Political Science. How has UROP impacted your time at FSU? UROP was a crucial part of my transition into FSU, both as a student eager to explore the world of undergraduate research and as an individual hoping to feel acclimated to the larger campus community. I credit much of my smooth adjustment to college - and many of the opportunities I’ve since pursued - to my involvement in UROP. I am a big reader - thrillers are my favorite! 0AE00C67-B3CD-4527-B6D4-B9B1F3C8E071.JPEG 2025 No https://cre.fsu.edu/urop-leader-information-submission?element_parents=elements/headshot&ajax_form=1&_wrapper_format=drupal_ajax&token=QjeTCUCwvf0FbpxCeQv7kHdp9lq4dd-lOMli2uUUVco 2025-2026

I'm interested in how CS and math allow us to understand biological phenomena at a significantly faster rate and deeper level, as well as how it can reveal biological workings that would have been hidden to us otherwise. I've participated in UROP, the Florida Undergraduate Research Conference (FURC), the Undergraduate Research Symposium (URS) at FSU, and the Tri-Beta Biological Honor Society Poster Competition! How do you hope to impact your students as a UROP Leader? As a UROP leader, I hope to provide my students the support, resources, and opportunities that were limited to me when I was starting in research. My personal experience entering into research was very confusing, stressful, and nerve-racking, mainly due to the fact that I didn't have much guidance or support on how to reach out to professors, how to advocate for myself, how to perform research tasks, and much more. I hope to relieve any of these nuisances that students may face during their entrance into research at FSU by being that support and allowing my students to focus on their growth and research work! I love playing tennis, trying new foods (fun fact, there's not a single food I would not eat), seeing new places, meeting new people, learning new things, and listening to music! My current research investigates the neural mechanisms underlying cognitive control and examines how non-invasive brain stimulation, particularly Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), modulates these processes. We aim to understand how targeted neural modulation can influence cognitive performance which can aid in the treatment of internalizing disorders such as depression and trauma-related conditions.

Additionally, I am interested in the application of theoretical models of suicide, with a particular focus on how constructs like negative urgency contribute to elevated suicide risk. Currently, I am completing an honors thesis that investigates the role of negative urgency within high-risk populations.
I’ve presented at various research conferences sharing my findings and collaborating with like minded individuals. I am also completing an Honors In The Major project. How has UROP impacted your time at FSU? Coming into my undergraduate career, I knew I enjoyed research, but I was quite determined to pursue a career in medicine. The transition from high school research to collegiate research was surprisingly smooth, and I was fortunate enough to be paired with one of the most exceptional mentors possible. Through his guidance and the time he dedicated to teaching me as much as he could about his field, I gradually realized that this was where I truly belonged. With the support of UROP, I secured a position in one of my labs and worked my way up to research supervisor. I then joined another lab to further explore my interests and expand my knowledge, and I am currently completing an honors thesis. In conclusion, without UROP, my transition to research would not have been as seamless or fulfilling. I love sitting in the sun especially by the beach or pool and playing with my kittens! Our preliminary results found that first appearance court sessions vary greatly between all the county courts in Florida's Second Judicial Circuit. This leads to sentencing and plea deals for defendants to greatly vary depending on what county they must attend their first appearance court session in. How has UROP impacted your time at FSU? As a student hoping to attend law school in the future, I believe UROP has greatly impacted the way I view the courts system and provided me with a better understanding of the injustices seen within it everyday. It has led me to recognize that change needs to happen within the criminal justice system starting with how the state prosecutors do their jobs. This only makes me want to strive harder to become a lawyer in the future and be able to implement the research I learned into my practice. I am currently a member of FSU's competitive mock trial team and am very passionate about the program! As for hobbies, I like to crochet, read, and play sand or indoor volleyball with friends! My goal is to help them succeed in their goals in research and personal goals by sharing the knowledge and experience I’ve gained. Drawing from my line of research, I have learned the importance of perspective and reflecting on the thinking process while teaching and being a student. I hope to bring this into the classroom to help students think more deeply about their work and learning processes. I wish for my students to have growth from start to finish, helping them see how research can be not only meaningful but also fun. Beyond developing research skills, I hope they walk away with life skills—like critical thinking, collaboration, and confidence—that will benefit them far beyond UROP. We examined how participants behaved in a third-party punishment task using a naturalistic group design. We also collected individual differences in personality traits, such as dominance and prestige orientation, political orientation, sibling order, and the big-5 to understand how these may contribute to the likelihood of certain participants punishing (or not punishing) wrongdoers in the group.

I am now transitioning into a new lab in the Biology Department under the guidance of Dr. Yu. Using budding yeast our research goal is to understand how chromosomes organize themselves and segregate during cell division. Recently, our research has been expanded to a new frontier focusing on determining the mechanics of the nuclear envelope involved in regulating chromosome movement, recombination, gene expression, and cellular rejuvenation. We do this through lab techniques such as yeast transformation, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and others.
How has UROP impacted your time at FSU? Participating in UROP at FSU has had a meaningful impact on my time as a student. I feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to get involved in research right off the bat, and I'm proud to say that this will be my third year conducting undergraduate research. UROP allowed me to engage in hands-on research early in my college career, which strengthened my critical thinking and academic skills. Working closely with two faculty mentors (Dr. Martinez and Dr. Yu) helped me explore new interests and gain clarity on my academic and career goals. Presenting my work at the UROP Symposium also boosted my confidence in public speaking and communication. Overall, UROP gave me a deeper connection to the university community and a strong foundation for future opportunities in medicine. Zeta Tau Alpha- Vp of Administration

UROP has been an incredibly enriching experience and a highlight of my time at FSU. This program has given me the resources to explore, learn, and grow both professionally and personally. It not only given me the opportunity to delve into research, but also enhance my overall critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills. I am involved in various clubs at FSU such as Medical Brigades, Students for Sexual Assault Awareness, and Who We Play For. Outside of school and UROP, however, I love to be outside, read, surf, and spend time with friends and family! processed-AFE94166-91C9-44F6-8926-B74F2F7B68A0.jpeg 2025 No https://cre.fsu.edu/urop-leader-information-submission?element_parents=elements/headshot&ajax_form=1&_wrapper_format=drupal_ajax&token=abRVBK-o-t47k6y2EuEyiSmwlVEmdEUoqPrnh5dwhP8 2025-2026
