Overall Research Project Description This research looks at how medical providers communicate with both patients and insurance companies and how they are able to make medical recommendations that meets the wants and needs of both these two entities to the best of their ability. This research is multi-method, specifically using a combination of qualitative and secondary data. The main goals of this project is to better understand how a medical provider makes decisions when they have multiple, sometimes competing, pressures from various sources (i.e., the patient, the hospital, insurance etc.).

Research Tasks The tasks will eventually be decided between me and the research assistant(s). In general most of the work will be with the data/empirical portion of the project and less so with the theory. Tasks can include things like data analysis (both qualitative and quantitative), data cleaning, etc.

Skills that research assistant(s) may need: There are no required skills, but some familiarity with data analysis or coding would be recommended/appreciated. :)

Mentoring Philosophy My mentoring philosophy is generally that I want this to be mostly student led in terms of how much and what kind of work they want to do on the project. I want this to be a space where my student feels comfortable asking questions and coming to me for help when they need it. I view this more as a learning experience rather than something where I am expecting anyone to get everything right on their first try. I hope that this would be something that can be exciting and fun but that also provides a lot of learning and experience that the student can use in the future.
