This project investigates spelling abilities in elementary-aged children. Specifically, it examines how children’s oral language skills, literacy skills, and word characteristics influence their performance on spelling tasks. The findings will help identify the factors that contribute to spelling and improve our understanding of how these skills develop in young children.
Research tasks could include entering data, scoring assessments, coding, and document management. It is anticipated that research tasks will take place primarily at the Warren Building (201 W. Bloxham Street), therefore reliable access to transportation is required.
Required: Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (TEAMS, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook). Excellent time management. Reliable. Organized. Eager to learn.
Recommended: Experience with Redcap is a plus but not required. Interest in child language development, spelling, reading, education.

My mentoring philosophy is centered on intentionality, clarity, and transparency. I consider these elements foundational to strong mentor–mentee relationships, especially within collaborative projects. I believe that providing the right balance of guidance while encouraging independence empowers mentees to develop both confidence and competence. To support this, I strive to create a welcoming and encouraging environment that prioritizes open and transparent communication. I value providing training and low-risk practice before applying new skills to intended tasks, modeling processes, and explaining the “why”. I encourage reflection and offer constructive feedback. Through this approach, I aim to help mentees engage actively in the research process and develop skills that will serve their future endeavors.
