Overall Research Project Description Work with industry to conduct research on developing reduced order models (ROMs) that can be efficiently employed in an AI training environment. The objective will be to start with existing computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation results and conduct post processing operations to develop a correlation to physics-based ROM flight environment that captures boundary layer transition, heat transfer, and structural loading to enable optimization during preliminary design. As capabilities are developed, research will be conducted on how to integrate models into a machine learning (ML) workflow such as PyTorch.
Research Tasks 1. CFD post processing tool to extract flow feature information such as boundary layer height, momentum thickness, and any other parameters that would drive the developed ROM models.
2. Boundary layer transition correlation-based ROM
3. Development of Heat Transfer ROM. Physics-Informed Neural Network forward problem of simulating structure temperature distribution under a given heat flux or boundary condition derived from a CFD solution database.
4. Piston theory ROM development for static and dynamic aeroelasticity.
Skills that research assistant(s) may need: Recommended experience with Matlab, Python, and PyTorch programing languages.
Mentoring Philosophy Working with undergraduate students through the research project, I believe they have to work on something engaging and not just a hired hand to assist a graduate student. This means we work on projects that let the student grow at their pace along with not being on the critical research path of a graduate student. They are expected to present their work and I work with them on how to effectively communicate as an engineer in a proactive way. This has led to many undergraduate students appreciating the research environment and they typically will have high levels of enthusiasm to continue their education as a graduate student. We also will focus on undergraduate developing additional industry skills that will make them stand out from the crowd when they graduate. This project will have an industry partner that may lead to summer internships.
