Title of the Project Freestream Wind Tunnel Characterization
Project Keywords High-Speed Compressible Flows
Are you currently looking for research assistants? Yes
Number of Research Assistants Needed 1
Relevant Research Assistant Major(s) Mechanical Enginering
Project Location: On FSU Main Campus
If the project location is off campus, does the research assistant(s) need to provide their own transportation?
Please select the choice that most accurately describes your expectations for the research assistant(s): In-person
Approximately how many hours a week would the research assistant(s) need to work? 8
Roughly what time frame do you expect research assistant(s) to work? Flexible schedule (Combination of business and outside of business. TBD between student and research mentor.)
Overall Research Project Description Use pressure measurements to develop a characterization method for freestream flow in high-speed compressible wind tunnels and flight. Student will learn how to conduct analysis of computational fluid dynamic (CFD) results to back out freestream flow conditions. Positive results on different measurement configurations may lead to testing in the Polysonic Wind Tunnel (https://polysonic.fsu.edu/) during project out years. The effort will teach the basics of CFD analysis process including problem definition, grid generation, CFD set up, execution, and post-processing the results. The work is kept two-dimensional to focus on the understanding process of how and why the analysis is done the way it is.
Research Tasks Characterization of the surface pressure profile and loading of an asymmetric two-dimensional wedge using CFD. The wedge angles, leading edge radius and free stream conditions are the parameters to be investigated.
Skills that research assistant(s) may need: Required: First year calculus.
Recommended: Matlab. Willingness to learn basic shock relations for compressible flow. Desire to learn how to conduct simple CFD simulations.
Mentoring Philosophy Working with undergraduate students through the research project, I believe they have to work on something engaging and not just a hired hand to assist a graduate student. This

means we work on projects that let the student grow at their pace along with not being on the critical research path of a graduate student. They are expected to present their work and I work with them on how to effectively communicate as an engineer in a proactive way. This has led to many undergraduate students appreciating the research environment and they typically will have high levels of enthusiasm to continue their education as a graduate student. We also will focus on undergraduate developing additional industry skills that will make them stand out from the crowd when they graduate.
