As a newly appointed postdoctoral researcher, I recently completed my Ph.D., a journey that began with significant challenges. Although I had two years of experience as an undergraduate research assistant in participant recruitment and data collection, I initially struggled with software skills, statistics, and academic writing. These early obstacles made research feel overwhelming. Fortunately, I had excellent mentors whose kindness and guidance helped me persevere. Their support revealed the transformative power of compassionate mentorship and deeply influenced my own mentoring philosophy.

Because I’ve experienced the steep learning curve firsthand, I understand how daunting the beginning of a research journey can be. I strive to create a more supportive experience for my mentees—one that helps them grow both professionally and personally. My mentoring philosophy centers on fostering a safe, inclusive environment where students can explore ideas, take intellectual risks, and develop confidence.

I take a student-focused, flexible, and respectful approach, prioritizing effectiveness and well-being over rigid working hours. I see myself as a guide and collaborator, offering constructive feedback and access to resources while encouraging mentees to pursue their own ideas. I also ensure that contributions are fairly recognized through appropriate authorship and credit in all collaborative projects. Ultimately, my goal as a mentor is to build strong, lasting relationships that support each student’s academic progress and personal growth.

The FLORENCE Project (Florida’s Linked Opioid Response and Epidemiological Network for Comprehensive Evaluation), sponsored by the Florida Department of Children & Families under the Applied Research Contract (LH862), aims to support the state’s opioid abatement strategies funded by the Opioid Settlement Trust Fund. Led by the FSU Florida Center for Prevention Research, the project provides applied research, policy evaluation, and data-driven models to assess intervention effectiveness, inform future needs, and improve health outcomes. This $6 million, 5-year initiative includes partnerships with ISF, FSU’s College of Social Work, the Survey Foundry, and the College of Communication and Information’s Biostatistics, Informatics, and Research Design Program.

The ongoing research focuses on analyzing public datasets related to adolescent development and substance use, with a particular emphasis on opioid-related drug use. Available datasets enable exploration of topics such as the influence of family dynamics and peer relationships on adolescent risk behaviors, patterns of opioid use and misuse, overdose prevention and reversal strategies, and naloxone distribution. Research assistants are encouraged to pursue independent research projects, which may extend beyond adolescence to include emerging adulthood or adult development.
