TBD between student and research mentor.) Overall Research Project Description: While fossil fuels are the world’s primary source of energy, they also come at the expense of deleterious effects to the environment and human health. In addition, fossil fuels are a finite resource, and it is predicted that this source of energy will be depleted within the next fifty to one-hundred years. From this, it is becoming more pertinent that we look towards alternative sources of energy. There are many avenues for addressing this issue such as solar, bio, and wind energy, however, the goal of this research is towards improvements to fuel cell technology. Fuel cells are electrochemical devices that directly convert chemical energy into electrical energy. There are many types of fuel cells, but the main types that are of current interest are proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) and anionic -exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). This research will be focused on AEMFCs. Research Tasks: Literature Review Data Analysis Synthesis Data Collection Skills that research assistant(s) may need:: Problem solving/mathematics Chemical Safety (very important and non-negotiable) A good attitude Eagerness to perform research duties Mentoring Philosophy: Creating an environment for active learning is very important to me. While it’s important that I aid in tasks assigned to my students, I think it’s also equally important that my students reach a point where they can perform assigned projects without my guidance. My goal is to help my students become independent and develop critical thinking skills that will be important for their future endeavors. I also firmly believe in creating a fun atmosphere when learning as this really sets the tone for productivity.
