Overall Research Project Description How do state media in authoritarian countries influence public opinion through selective reporting of international events? Leaders in authoritarian regimes utilize the centralized control of mass media to shape the rhetoric and to direct the information flow of what types of news could enter the public discursive space. On the other hand, there are potential backlashes against the leader if the alternation or lack of information becomes visible to the public. Using the country case of China, this project examines the type of foreign news that is reported by the state media and the rhetoric used to frame sensitive events.
