As AI-powered systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, and others become increasingly prevalent, many educational institutions have introduced policies that limit, regulate, or completely restrict their use due to concerns about academic integrity and data privacy. While these restrictions are intended to preserve and uphold academic standards, little or nothing is known about what happens when students leave the formal school environment. This study seeks to explore how institutional restrictions on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools shape students’ engagement with and perceptions of these technologies beyond formal academic settings. Ultimately, this research will contribute to understanding the broader educational impact of institutional AI governance specifically, how it affects students’ agency, learning autonomy, and digital literacy in an era of rapidly evolving AI technologies.
