This project supports the development of an honors course on the history of disability and accessibility in the United States, with a specific focus on the experiences of Black disabled students. The student researcher will assist in building the course by conducting literature reviews to identify relevant books, articles, and sociological studies. The research will draw on both on-campus and online resources, ensuring accessibility without the need for travel. Regular check-ins every other week, either in person or via Zoom, will guide the process and provide space for collaboration.
Literature review and potential data collection
Research Literacy, Critical Analysis, Writing & Note-Taking, Understanding of Historical/Sociological Methods, Information Management, Time Management, Communication - all required
As a UROP mentor, I am committed to creating an inclusive, equitable, and supportive environment where students can succeed as researchers. I believe mentoring should be student-centered, tailored to individual strengths and goals, and grounded in respect and open communication. My role is to provide clear expectations, structure, and resources while also encouraging students to pursue their own intellectual curiosity. This means helping them develop essential research skills—such as identifying sources, analyzing evidence, and writing effectively—while also giving them the freedom to ask meaningful questions and explore new directions.

I view mentoring as a collaborative process that emphasizes growth as much as outcomes. Research is not just about collecting information but about cultivating critical thinking, creativity, and self-reflection. I support students by providing regular check-ins, clear guidance, and constructive feedback, as well as opportunities to reflect on their progress. At the same time, I believe in holding students to high standards and empowering them with the tools to meet those expectations. By the end of the project, I hope students will leave UROP not only with new knowledge but also with the confidence and skills to apply what they have learned to future academic and professional challenges.
