Adolescence is a critical period for developing a strong sense of self. In our multicultural society, understanding the role of ethnic-racial identity in this process is essential for promoting positive youth development and well-being. However, there is still much to learn about how this journey unfolds and what factors help adolescents to flourish.
This project aims to fill this gap. Our study examines the different ways adolescents form their identities and investigates the impact of their identity on key outcomes like psychosocial well-being, behavioral health, and academic success. The goal is to better understand the processes so that we can best support positive development among diverse youth.
As a research assistant working with Dr. Luo and her research team, you will be at the forefront of this important work. You will join a supportive team and gain a comprehensive understanding of the research process from the ground up. In this role, you will:
1. Explore the connections between identity, culture, and adolescent well-being.
2. Learn the fundamentals of ethical research, from participant recruitment to data collection.
3. Develop strong analytical and communication skills valued in any professional field.
4. Contribute to a project with the potential to inform future programs that support young people.

My main goal as a mentor is to help you succeed, both on this project and in your future goals. My approach is deeply shaped by my own experience as an undergraduate researcher. During my own undergraduate studies, I participated in a research opportunity program, so I remember how exciting and challenging it can be to join a team for the first time. I am committed to making sure your time with us is both productive and positive.
I know that the best experiences start with understanding what you want to achieve. We will begin by discussing your interests and goals, whether you are exploring a career in research, preparing for graduate school, or simply want to learn new skills. From there, we will create a plan that gives you real ownership of your work, allowing you to see the direct impact of your contributions.
I believe the best way to learn is by doing, and my goal is to help you grow from learning the basics to confidently handling new challenges. Most importantly, I strive to create a supportive and respectful team environment where you feel comfortable asking questions and sharing your ideas. Mistakes are a normal part of the research process and are always treated as valuable learning opportunities.
Ultimately, I want you to leave this project with a set of new skills, a deeper understanding of how research works, and the confidence to take on whatever comes next in your academic and professional journey.
