Overall Research Project Description | This project is a scoping review that will explore how colorism affects the mental health of women across diverse racial and ethnic groups, including but not limited to Latin American, Caribbean, Pacific Islander, South Asian, East Asian, and North and South American populations. The review will identify and synthesize research that describes how colorism emerges within these groups, how it is experienced, and the emotional and psychological consequences women face, such as depression, anxiety, or trauma. By mapping existing evidence, this project will highlight similarities and differences across groups, address an overlooked dimension of health disparities, and provide insights that can inform culturally responsive mental health screening and interventions. |
Research Tasks | Research assistants will have the chance to be part of each step of the review process and learn how research is done in real time. Tasks will include helping to search academic databases, reviewing articles to see if they fit the project, and collecting key information in organized charts and forms. Students will also gain experience using citation tools, keeping track of articles in spreadsheets, and supporting the team in making sure our data is accurate. As the project develops, assistants may help spot themes across studies, create simple tables or visuals, and even contribute to writing parts of the final paper. Along the way, students will be included in team discussions and receive mentorship in research skills, writing, and collaboration. This role is designed to give students practical, resume-building experience and an inside look at how academic research is carried out. |
Skills that research assistant(s) may need: | No prior research experience is required; training will be provided. Required: Careful attention to detail and willingness to follow clear steps in a process Good time management and ability to stay on task Comfort searching for articles online or willingness to learn how to use academic databases Strong written and verbal communication skills Ability to work well as part of a team and take feedback Recommended: Familiarity with citation tools such as Zotero, EndNote, or Mendeley Coursework or interest in public health, nursing, or social science research Exposure to research methods or prior experience helping with a project Basic skills in organizing data in Excel or Google Sheets Interest in maternal health, health equity, or related topics |
Mentoring Philosophy | My mentoring philosophy is grounded in equity, support, and growth. I believe in meeting students where they are, recognizing their unique strengths, and creating an environment where they feel valued and capable. I aim to foster confidence and independence by providing clear guidance, constructive feedback, and opportunities for meaningful contributions to research and scholarship. Just as I strive to listen and incorporate others’ perspectives in my own work, I encourage open dialogue, mutual respect, and collaboration. Ultimately, my goal is to mentor students in ways that not only build their skills but also empower them to see themselves as future leaders and change agents in healthcare and research. |
