Overall Research Project Description Charged polymers enables selective ion transport in solutions. Membrane-based mineral recovery is a promising approach to wastewater treatment in which charged polymers can be employed. The ion transport behavior and durability depend on the physical and structural properties of the polymers. The objective of this project is to study the effects of chemical and thermal treatments on material properties and transport phenomena in charged membranes. Materials will be prepared under the instruction of the mentor, and the properties will be measured using electrochemical and spectroscopic techniques. The learning outcomes of this project include fundamental understanding of polymeric materials, good laboratory practice, and data analysis skills.
Research Tasks Literature review
Sample preparation
Data collection
Data analysis
Skills that research assistant(s) may need: Required: Positive attitude and self-motivation.
Recommended: Communication and computer skills (e.g.MS Office) are strongly recommended. Trainings for computer skills and data analysis will be offered.
Mentoring Philosophy Based on mutual respect with the students, I aim to create an environment where the students feel free to share their questions and challenges without hesitation. By taking prompt action and providing appropriate advice I expect to build a relationship of trust through effective communication. This will help the students to be self-motivated and proactive, making them conduct creative research and bring out their potential.
To provide productive mentoring, firstly I will try to understand the students’ academic level, research interest and career goals through conversations. I will help to develop short- and long-term plans to achieve their goals. The progress will be tracked through weekly based regular meeting to encourage consistent effort from the student and provide effective feedbacks. Specific and clear assignments to improve the progress will be provided to the students. Through this process, the students will acquire the project-related knowledge as well as skills of research method, technical writing and presentation, and safe laboratory practices. The students will be objectively evaluated based on their academic achievement, research performance and personal improvement.
