Research indicates emerging adults are an at-risk group for harmful alcohol use, and individuals of color or sexual minority individuals are prone to greater negative consequences of alcohol use. Religious coping has been indicated as a moderator of alcohol use outcomes among certain groups but remains largely unexplored in research on drinking to cope and has not been investigated within groups experiencing intersectional minority stressors (e.g. LGBTQIA+ people of color). In the development of culturally tailored interventions, further research must be conducted to identify relationships among minority stressors, religious coping, and alcohol use/drinking to cope. This project will investigate the role of religious coping in the relationship between minority stressors and alcohol use/drinking to cope among individuals who identify as racial/ethnic minority or sexual minority individuals.
Research assistants will conduct literature reviews, assist with participant recruitment, transform data (e.g. from Strongly Agree to 5), and assist in statistical analyses.
Required:
- previous experience conducting literature reviews
- formatting research papers according to APA 7th edition

Recommended:
- familiarity with searching databases (e.g. PSYCInfo), utilizing citation managers (e.g. Zotero, Mendeley), and search engines (e.g. Google Scholar) to compile relevant articles
- working knowledge of descriptive statistics
Research can be a daunting process in the beginning, but it is an opportunity to contribute to the scientific community, advocate for inclusive practices in research, and refine your professional skills. My goal is to guide you through what might be initially daunting and help you reap the rewards and gratification of telling a story with your data points. I hope to encourage my mentee to find their own niche and seek out literature that motivates them to work hard and create change in our world. I will always welcome good-natured curiosity. While I hope to guide you in improving every time, I do not expect you to "get it right" every single time. Research is about trying again and again, approaching problems from a different perspective, and staying curious. Accountability and commitment are crucial to the functioning mentor-mentee relationship. Let's strive to uphold those, and let's develop your skills together.
