| Overall Research Project Description | Adults with higher body mass have a greater risk for cardiovascular problems. Small changes in how the body controls blood pressure and heart rate can be early warning signs. One important measure is nocturnal dipping: Blood pressure should fall at night during sleep. When this drop in blood pressure does not occur, it may be an early sign for dysfunction. This project will use 24-hour blood pressure monitors to compare people with and without preclinical obesity. Students will help look at patterns like blood pressure variability and night-time dipping. This may help find early signs of cardiovascular disease risk. Students will learn basic data analysis using real-world health data. |

| Research Tasks | Help perform literature reviews, recruit research participants, help generate/manage recruitment approaches, schedule/coordinate with study participants, help with data collection, help with exercise testing and other research procedures, provide data management support, data analysis, assist with IRB, help with equipment maintenance, perform equipment calibration, and/or other study-related tasks. |
| Skills that research assistant(s) may need: | The research assistant should be ambitious and curious about research, show professionalism in the workplace, be punctual and reliable, and communicate effectively. No prior research experience is needed, but the candidate should be eager to learn, ask questions when unsure, follow instructions carefully, pay attention to detail, and be open to feedback. |
| Mentoring Philosophy | My mentoring philosophy is to help undergraduates think independently, become more interested in research, and learn the basics of human studies. I encourage students to ask questions, solve problems, and get involved in every part of the research process. My goal is to guide students so they gain confidence, understand how research works, and feel excited about discovery. |
