| Overall Research Project Description | Our research team has access to the latest space telescope data, including the James Webb Space Telescope, the European Sattelite Euclid, and the Hubble Space Telescope. We are looking for exploding stars, called supernovae, by comparing the new images against the images taken in the past. It's tiny dots out of billions of pixels, and we need manpower to explore the Big Data from space to train AI. We may encounter discoveries such as gravitational lenses, high proper motion stars, and something unknown to us! |
| Research Tasks | We ask you to visually inspect the number of images taken by space telescopes and compare them against with each other. With your database skills, we would like to organize them and sort them out. If you have a computing background, we ask you to classify the data by categories. If you have a physics/astro background, we can work on spectral classifications. After the data collection, we would like to analyze the data and extract science from them. |
| Skills that research assistant(s) may need: | Literacy in SQL and Python coding skills are recommended. The database oriented website-building skills are highly helpful. |
| Mentoring Philosophy | We aim to develop the skills of how to read and extract the data and derive a scientific understanding of the universe. We live in the era of big data and its evaluation is an important skill to acquire. The real data includes defects in instrumentation, noise, and errors. The skill of finding 'the one' out of billions of pixels and extracting the science can be applicable to any area, and this is what we would like to achieve from this project. We will adjust the topic depending on the skills, and we respect the diversity and inclusion policies. Non-physics majors and Minors are encouraged to apply. This project is going to be a group effort, and we are seeking people who can be a great team player. |
