NASA and other space organizations (SpaceX, Blue Origen, etc) are looking for protective coatings to aid in extending the life of equipment and subsystems critical to mission success. Students will be investigating protective coatings meant to be used in space environments.
Students will conduct experiments and learn how to interpret data in a tribology (study of friction, wear, and lubricants) laboratory. The main goal of the work performed by students is to help advance readiness of materials to be used in space environments.
There are no "required" skills needed to start working in this laboratory.
Recommended:
- Excel
- Matlab
**Recommended skills can/will be learned while working in lab**
Common mentoring philosophies for our lab are encouraging growth through challenges, and, giving mentees ownership of their work, and promoting accountability. We believe Mentees get out what they put in and we encourage them to work on a problem by conducting literature reviews, and independent research. With this said, regular check-ins are conducted with mentees, and we encourage students to ask questions and for assistance when stuck on a problem to initiate one-on-one learning opportunities.
