Project Description

I am recruiting students to develop my research program in the field of firm marketing strategies. Through this project I am looking to identify the different features of executives voice disclosures that influence stakeholders such as stock analysts and investors. I am trying to develop a machine learning algorithm to extract these features from audio recordings of earnings calls. As a first step, I intend to develop an annotated training data set of voice samples.

Research Tasks: This project can involves literature review about audio analysis, linguistics and preparing a training dataset of audio and text data.

Skills that research assistant(s) may need: Required : Knowledge about firm disclosures and earnings calls, Introductory knowledge of Python
Recommended: Familiarity with text and audio analysis in python.

Mentoring Philosophy

This is my second year of mentoring students through UROP. My first year has helped me in understanding the expectations of students and the time constraints they face to do research. This year I am recruiting students for a specific project and I will be working with them in developing a very specific set of skills. Through this project students can expect to learn the following:
1. How to conduct a literature review
2. Using LLM's to conduct preliminary academic research
3. Understand different types of firm disclosures, specifically earning's calls
4. Work with text and audio data and learn feature extraction from this data.

While I will provide students with necessary guidance, I give students the opportunity to explore different resources independently and learn from them. Research process is often iterative and I urge students to be flexible as the research positioning may change based on the initial set of results.
