Project Description

The History of Hispanic Contributions to FSU project seeks to document, preserve, and elevate the legacy of Hispanic/Latinx students, alumni, faculty, and organizations at Florida State University. This project will explore how Hispanic individuals and communities have shaped the cultural, academic, and social fabric of FSU. By combining archival research, oral histories, and community engagement, this work aims to highlight contributions that have historically been underrepresented in institutional narratives, while fostering a deeper understanding of diversity and inclusion on campus.

Research Tasks: Conduct a literature review of FSU archives, yearbooks, newspapers, and scholarly sources.

Collect oral histories and interviews with alumni, faculty, and staff.

Analyze qualitative data from interviews, archival material, and historical documents.

Synthesize findings into research reports, timelines, and potential publications.

Assist in curating digital or physical exhibits to share the project’s findings with broader audiences.

Skills that research assistant(s) may need: Required: Strong written and verbal communication; qualitative research skills; attention to detail; ability to manage and organize data; professionalism when conducting interviews.

Recommended: Familiarity with Hispanic/Latinx studies, oral history methods, archival research, and/or digital storytelling platforms.

Mentoring Philosophy

My mentoring philosophy centers on mutual respect, collaboration, and empowerment. I view mentorship as a partnership in which mentees are encouraged to set their own goals, while I provide guidance, support, and resources to help them succeed. I prioritize creating a safe and inclusive environment where mentees feel comfortable asking questions, taking risks, and learning from mistakes. By identifying each mentee’s strengths and motivations, I aim to tailor opportunities that foster professional growth and confidence. I share my own experiences and lessons learned openly, believing that transparency builds trust and accountability. Ultimately, I want mentees to develop ownership of their work, confidence in their abilities, and a strong sense of pride in contributing to meaningful research that uplifts underrepresented voices.
