Project Description

This project investigates the adoption of SysML v2 compared to SysML 1.x in both academia and industry. The student will map the evolving tool ecosystem, identify barriers and challenges in migration, and collect insights from practitioners through surveys or interviews. The objectives are to (1) document the current state of adoption, (2) analyze migration challenges and opportunities, and (3) provide recommendations to guide future tool development and training approaches.

Research Tasks: Learn the basic differences between SysML 1.x and SysML v2.
Review articles, reports, and software documentation with guidance from the research team.
Help create a list of software tools that support each version of SysML.
Identify universities, companies, and organizations using or developing SysML v2.
Help prepare survey or interview questions.
Organize survey and interview responses.
Look for common trends and challenges reported by SysML users.
Create charts, summaries, presentation slides, and other materials describing the results.
Contribute to a final report on SysML v2 adoption.

Skills that research assistant(s) may need: Required

Interest in learning about engineering software and systems modeling.
Ability to read information and summarize the main points.
Basic experience with Word, Excel, or Google Workspace.
Good organization and attention to detail.
Willingness to ask questions and learn new research methods.
Ability to communicate and work reliably with the research team.

Recommended, but not required

Coursework or interest in engineering, computer science, information technology, or a related field.
Experience creating charts or presentations.
Familiarity with programming, data analysis, systems engineering, or SysML.

No previous experience with SysML is required; training and guidance will be provided.

Mentoring Philosophy

As a mentor, my goal is to create an environment where undergraduate researchers can confidently explore new ideas, develop technical skills, and contribute meaningfully to active research. I view mentorship as a collaborative process — students bring curiosity, fresh perspectives, and energy, while I provide guidance, resources, and structure to help them grow.
I believe in balancing independence with support. Students will receive the background, tools, and initial training needed to get started, but will also be encouraged to take ownership of their work, make decisions, and learn through problem-solving. I emphasize clear communication, regular check-ins, and constructive feedback to ensure progress while maintaining flexibility for different learning styles.
My projects often combine technical research with creative problem-solving, so I encourage students to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and connect their work to real-world applications. Above all, I want students to leave the experience with not only new skills but also greater confidence in their ability to learn, adapt, and contribute in any professional or academic setting.
