Project Description

Mathematics often involves abstract concepts that are not obvious to most people (students or any general learner). Though experts in the field understand these abstract concepts, translating these concepts visually for education requires additional skills. Thankfully, recent developments enabled by online educators (https://www.manim.community/ or 3Blue1Brown) are helping teachers better communicate mathematical concepts to students. This project is a pilot to develop visual aids for teaching mathematics-related concepts.

Research Tasks: * Choose an undergraduate-level mathematical concept (calculus or linear algebra)
* Develop code to convey the concept

Skills that research assistant(s) may need: * Any Basic Undergraduate course on Mathematics (Required)

Mentoring Philosophy

To learn is to get better at making decisions. Decision-making requires identifying and understanding problems and applying skills to solve them.

Problem-based learning: Real-world problems are complex and multidisciplinary. The problem-based learning approach gives students a problem they are excited about, enabling them to develop the skills to solve it. As a mentor, I guide them in the right direction and help them develop the skills they want, rather than a "learn-then-solve" approach.

Learning to Learn: With the rapidly changing skills required in the technology-driven world, everyone must become a lifelong learner. In addition to the skills needed to complete the project, I intend to develop a growth mindset toward learning. This can be achieved by providing sufficient space and time to learn, and adequate feedback (weekly 30-minute meetings) to motivate the learning of complex skills.
