Project Description

I am currently working on a project analyzing the history of the state's intervention in the family and how race may play a role in these interactions. Currently, I am analyzing documents from political movements to analyze how they talk about their visions for the child welfare system. Students will have the opportunity to pursue their own related project should they desire.

Research Tasks: Literature review, data analysis, writing.

Skills that research assistant(s) may need: There are no required skills beyond communicating and thinking critically. If you are interested in computational methods, text as data, qualitative sociology, or social theory, then you will have a chance to learn these subjects.

Mentoring Philosophy

My mentorship philosophy is pretty straightforward. The two things needed for an effective mentor-mentee relationship are communication and effort. Beyond that, there is no expectation of a certain level of ability. I intend to have a mutually beneficial relationship, where the student gains real research experience, skills, and mentorship that supports their goals, whether that's graduate school, law school, or simply figuring out what comes next, and I gain a thoughtful collaborator whose questions and perspective sharpen the project. I am happy to meet students where they are, but I expect them to show up, follow through, and tell me when something isn't working so we can address it together.
