Project Description
Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly used in image recognition systems, smart devices, and digital platforms. As these technologies become more common, questions about privacy and personal data are receiving growing attention.The purpose of this project is to explore how generative AI can support the development of privacy-centered textile patterns and apparel concepts and to examine how consumers perceive these designs.
Students will use AI tools to generate and refine textile pattern concepts, explore how visual design elements may influence AI-based image recognition systems, and assist with survey-based research. The project will also investigate the balance between privacy-related functionality, aesthetics, and wearability. The project combines fashion design, artificial intelligence, and consumer research, providing students with hands-on experience with emerging creative technologies. Students will contribute to design development, data collection, and research communication while gaining practical experience in fashion, design, and technology-related fields.
No prior research experience is required. Students from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
Research Tasks: Students may participate in:
• Literature reviews
• AI-assisted textile pattern and apparel design
• Survey and interview data collection
• Data organization and analysis
• Testing and evaluating design concepts
• Visual presentation and poster development
• Research communication and dissemination
Research activities will be tailored to students' interests, experience levels, and project needs. No prior research experience is required.

• Interest in learning about fashion, design, AI, or privacy-related topics
• Dependability and willingness to contribute to project activities
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively
Recommended
• Familiarity with photography, image editing, or social media content creation
• Interest in fashion design, textiles, or digital technologies
• Experience using AI tools for creative or academic projects
• Basic design, visual communication, or presentation skills
• Experience with literature reviews, surveys, interviews, or data analysis
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, or similar software
No prior research experience is required. Training and guidance will be provided throughout the project.
Mentoring Philosophy
My mentoring philosophy is based on collaboration, mutual respect, and student growth. I believe undergraduate research provides valuable opportunities for students to explore new ideas, develop practical skills, and gain confidence through hands-on experience. I work closely with students to understand their interests, strengths, and goals, and I strive to connect those interests with meaningful research experiences. Students are encouraged to ask questions, contribute ideas, and take ownership of their work. As they gain knowledge and experience, I provide increasing opportunities for independence while offering guidance and support throughout the research process. Because many undergraduate researchers are new to research, I emphasize clear communication, realistic expectations, and a supportive environment where learning from challenges and mistakes is part of the process. I value curiosity, initiative, and a willingness to learn more than prior research experience.My goal is to help students develop research, critical thinking, problem-solving, and professional communication skills while fostering confidence in their ability to contribute to collaborative research projects and future academic or professional pursuits.
