Overall Research Project Description | In the United States, nearly 40% of food is wasted in kitchens due to the degradation of nutrients, spoilage, or safety concerns. This food loss was related to approximately 133 billion pounds and 161 billion worth of food in 2010. In order to reduce food loss and ensure the nutrition and safety of food products, our research project will integrate smart sensors and instrumentation with machine learning to rapidly and accurately study the chemical and microbiological properties of food products. More specifically, we will collect the food-related data using 3D-printed portable sensors, spectroscopy, and optical imaging; and then analyze the data using machine learning. This newly developed approach will be applied to predict the shelf life of food products and guide the consumers to plan their daily food consumption at home. |
Research Tasks | Students will be working closely with the research mentor Dr. Ma for literature review, data collection, and data analysis. There are also opportunities for students to write manuscripts and attend conferences with the supports from Dr. Ma. |
Skills that research assistant(s) may need: | Background in biology, chemistry, computer science, nutrition and food sciences are recommended. |
Mentoring Philosophy | My mentoring philosophy is student-centered. I will learn the career and academic goals of students in both short-term (within 1 year) and long-term (2-4 years). Based on the shared interest between students and myself, I will design a detailed project for students. I will develop different training plans for students who want to go to academia, industry, or governmental institutes. In this UROP program, I will closely work with students, share my own experience, and teach them both soft skills and technical knowledge. I will create a safe and enjoyable environment in which students feel it is fine to learn from mistakes. I will also encourage the growth of students through research challenges, starting with a little challenging tasks and gradually increasing the challenge levels based on the student's learning curve. |
