Flexible schedule (Combination of business and outside of business. TBD between student and research mentor.)
Projects are tailored to the UROP-researcher's interests.
Prior projects have included: Types of effective practice to increase students' development of a growth mindset; Undergraduate Student Perceptions and Valuation of Campus-based Group Tutoring; and An Analysis of Florida State Student Preferences and Biases when Selecting Tutors at the ACE Learning Studio.
The UROP-researcher may work on a solo project with Dr. Tackett or on a team. If they work with a team, they may participate in any of the following research activities: develop research questions, conduct a literature review, write sections of an IRB application, design interventions, manage data collection, participate in data analysis, summarize and present research results.
A potential solo topic is: Effective practices to support students with academic recovery. A potential team research project is identifying effective communication strategies and messaging with students.

Throughout the two-semester commitment, the project would provide first-hand research experience with researching surveys, survey design, specific strategy effectiveness research, human subject interview protocols, questioning techniques, various data collection and analysis methods, data synthesis, and data reporting and displays. Outcomes may include conference presentations and publications.

When working with students in a research mentoring context, I use a cognitive apprenticeship approach where my students are offered opportunities for meaningful participation and ownership. If compatible with their goals and abilities, I welcome students’ involvement with my research projects, and I can provide guidance with their independent project. In general, research mentorship begins with students discussing their goals and making a plan that includes bi-weekly objectives, elements of low-stakes practice, and incremental increases in responsibility and skill requirements (e.g., coding a transcript and identifying themes, running an analysis and interpreting it). I listen to their discussion of processes and decisions and provide guidance and resources as needed so that students learn different parts of the research and publication process in an authentic manner.
